Did you know that Snoop Dogg has his own full-time blunt roller? Some lucky person makes over $50,000 a year (and likely closer to six figures) just rolling joints and blunts for the legendary Doggfather.
Why? Because rolling joints is both an art and a science, requiring a certain amount of patience and skill.
If your joints constantly fall apart, burn your throat, or spill their herb all over the table, you can see why the rich and famous are hiring professionals to do the job.
But even if you don’t have Snoop’s bankroll, you can still learn how to roll the perfect joint at home. We’ll show you how below.

How to Roll a Joint – The Basics
You probably already know the fundamentals. But in case you’re brand new to the art of joint rolling, here’s a simple rundown:
1. Ground Your Herb
First, break down your buds into tiny chunks. You can do this by hand, but it’s much easier, faster, and more practical to use an herb grinder.
2. Create Your Filter
Next, make a crutch (joint filter). If you’re buying high-quality rolling paper, the filters should be included as well. If not, you’ll have to buy them separately or just use a piece of thick paper, like construction paper (about the size of a business card or baseball card).
Make two or three accordion folds along one end of the paper and then roll the paper into the shape of a thin tube.
3. Fill Your Joint
Fill your rolling paper with your ground herb and place the filter along one end of the paper, where your mouth will draw.
4. Start Rolling
Take the non-sticky side of the rolling paper (the bottom) and press it against the sticky side. Seal the joint from end to end, pinching firmly with your fingers and evenly distributing the weed as you go.
Use one thumb to roll the joint back and forth at the filter end. At the same time, use your other thumb to push the weed up (away from the filter), creating a cone shape. Roll the weed gently between your fingers, and tuck in the paper along the opposing end (opposite the filter).
5. Pack Your Joint
Use a pen, dabber, cigarette filter, or other small tool to pack the weed tightly at the open end. Packing will give you a slower and more even smoke, and it’s highly recommended.
6. Seal Your Joint
The final step is to twist and seal the paper at the end opposite the filter. This is where you’re going to light your joint. Enjoy!

Tips for How to Roll the Perfect Joint
Learning how to roll a joint is easy. But if you want to roll the perfect joint, there are a few important pro tips to keep in mind.
The first tip is just to practice. As with anything, the more you do it, the better you’ll get. Beyond that, here are a few ways to enhance your joint-rolling skills.
1. Don’t Skip the Filter
The filter is optional, and not everyone uses it. But it’s highly recommended if you want to roll the perfect joint. It increases airflow, gives you a more stable joint, reduces throat burn, and creates a much smoother experience.
2. Make It Finely Ground
You don’t necessarily need finely ground weed for a joint; even chopping will do. But if you want to roll the perfect joint, finer is better.
That’s why it’s so important to use a high-quality herb grinder (sold wherever cannabis accessories are sold). Seven to 10 twists will usually do the trick, but see what works for you.
3. Choose the Right Rolling Papers
One thing to keep in mind when choosing rolling papers is that the thickness of the paper matters.
Thick rolling papers—like hemp paper—are good for beginners because they’re easier to handle. As you gain more experience, though, you’ll want to gradually switch to thinner papers, as they provide a better smoking experience overall.
4. Twist the Bottom of Your Joint Before Adding Cannabis
If you struggle with weed constantly spilling out of your paper as you fill it, you might want to take a page from the Wiz Khalifa playbook.
A few years ago, Khalifa released a joint-rolling demonstration video where he twisted the paper at the bottom of the joint (opposite the filter end) before adding his herb. This allowed him to line the paper easily without his weed spilling out the bottom.
5. Invest in a Good Rolling Tray
A rolling tray will help you stay clean and organized as you assemble your joints. It has separate compartments for your paper, your cannabis flower, and your tools, so you can master how to roll the perfect joint without making a mess all over the kitchen table.
If you’re a beginner, choose a large rolling tray. This will give you more surface area to work with as you practice (as messes are going to be inevitable in the beginning).
6. Perfect Your Rolling Technique
If you want to roll the perfect joint, you have to find the right consistency. You want to roll it tight enough to hold the weed in place but not so tight as to eliminate airflow. This takes practice and time.
Once you’ve practiced for a while, you’ll understand how a perfectly rolled joint feels in your hands. Then you’ll be one step closer to getting it right every time.
